While we would like to both protect our environment and streamline our classroom by creating a totally paperless class, that is not realistic. We will eliminate the use of paper when possible and appropriate to the task, substituting with individual electronic portfolios of work. Recent research has shown that the brain is more engaged and therefore better retains information when note-taking and thinking activities, such as brainstorming and planning, are completed using paper and pencil. Although we may transcribe notes, projects and written work to computers, our original thinking process will be done the old fashioned way, with paper and pencil. Creating Documents The district participates in Google Apps for Education, GAFE, and maintains a contract with Microsoft. What this means for your student is that he or she will have access through the district to several types of software for creating word processed documents, spreadsheets, and presentation slides.
Your students will be given more information and an individual login once school begins. You do not need to purchase any type of document creation software for your student. In addition, we will be testing Google Classroom this year, which will provide us with a simpler way to distribute and turn in documents. |
Bring Your Own Device For the last three years we have been a BYOD, Bring Your Own Device, classroom. What that means is that once we complete digital citizenship training, and both you and your child sign the Acceptable Use Policy, your child may bring a device to class. This is not a requirement in any way, but rather a privilege that most students find helpful to their learning. Many are more comfortable using their personal device than one belonging to the school or classroom. If your child does not have a personal device, they will be able to use one of the class devices. Please do not feel that you must go out and purchase a device for your child.
Should you choose to provide your child with a device, keep in mind that the newest, most expensive is not needed at school. Students are able to do many of the things they will need on a daily basis on smartphones, even without cellular connections, or iPods. Larger projects, research, typing and video production are generally easier on a larger device. We have found great success with the most inexpensive Chromebooks and laptops. If you are thinking of purchasing a device, I suggest watching the sales as August is a good month for technology discounts. (Even better, get yourself the new device and pass your older one on to your student.) Read about our BYOD experience in the OCRegister. Copy of AUP to be added here. Back To School Night This year we will be piloting a new style of Back toSchool Night. We are posting our grade level information in video format for you. This will allow you to view the information at home at any time you need it not only in September, but throughout the school year.
On the traditional Back to School evening, we will be having a more informal Meet and Greet in the open area outside of our classrooms. Our goal is to focus our time on parents and teachers getting to know each other so that we can become a strong team to best support the learning of our students. We ask that you view the videos prior to BTSN on September 11th. If you have questions, we will be there to answer them for you at the Meet and Greet. If you are able to bring some appetizers or desserts to the share on the evening of the 11th, please let me know. We would like the evening to be a positive and memorable experience for all and having some treats always helps. We will be meeting from 6:30 - 7:15 in the open area surrounded by the portable classrooms. Our individual classrooms will be open for you to view as you please. This is our first time having this type of BTSN, though other grades in other schools within the district have done it. The feedback from parents who have experienced this method of meeting teachers has been very positive. As this is our first year, we anticipate that we will inadvertently omit something you would have liked to have seen. As this information comes to us, we will update the videos so that the information is available for your reference. |
